The Goulburn Broken Catchment Management Authority (GB CMA) is offering property owners in the bushfire affected areas with an opportunity for financial assistance along waterways burnt in the 2009 fires. Landowners may be eligible for assistance with stream side fencing, revegetation to re-establish riparian vegetation along waterways and subsidies for off stream water points. This support is only available for a short time with works needing to be completed before the end of June 2011.

Gaining greater skills and they’re free

Volunteer groups and organisations have welcomed the opportunity to take part in a range of free Skills Development Workshops being organised by Murrindindi Shire Council.
Following an open survey, the Council is preparing a number of workshops that will be held across the shire on a range of topics. The top six that were identified through the surveys will be conducted early in September through to mid December.
Murrindindi Deputy Mayor Cr Kevin Bellingham said more than 80 responses were received from community groups and organisations.
“It has been a pleasing take-up rate. The workshops will assist and support committees of all types to up-skill,” Cr Bellingham said.
“Our volunteers are such a valuable part of what makes our communities strong. Council is providing these workshops in recognition of community volunteer contributions at all levels.”
Cr Bellingham said community groups, clubs and organisations would gain a wealth of information from the programs in assisting them in carrying out the day to day tasks in managing, promoting and supporting their groups.
The first session has been based on community feedback and will act as a pilot to ensure that future programs are adapted to community needs.

Big Fish Competition
After the tragic events of the 2009 Black Saturday Bushfires, the shires of Murrindindi and Mitchell in regional Victoria were amongst some of the hardest hit. However, the regions are rebuilding and want to encourage tourists back. Through this competition, the Murrindindi Mitchell Bushfire Tourism Recovery Group (MMBTRG) are asking keen anglers and fishing novices to hit the water for their chance to win $50,000 big ones in a 16 day fishing competition.
Two tagged fish worth $50,000 each will be released into the Goulburn River to be caught from Saturday 2nd October until Saturday 9th October 2010 and then another two fish will be release in Lake Eildon (excluding the pondage) to be caught from Sunday 10th October until Sunday 17th October 2010.
The MMBTRG BIG FISH COMPETITION focuses on fresh water fish with angler’s able to cast a line in both the river and lake for a chance to win.
The MMBTRG is encouraging safe and legal fishing behavior throughout the competition and the Victorian recreational fishing regulations apply.
Try your luck along the banks of the majestic Goulburn River, the largest river basin in Victoria or hit Lake Eildon, located in the northern foothills of Victoria's Central Highlands, 150 km north-east of Melbourne.

The Mt Bullfight Ski Club, supported by Sport and Recreation Victoria, will once again hold a Family Day at the snow on Sunday August 22.
If you have never been cross country skiing before and want to have a go, grab this opportunity. Transport is provided by the club and includes free entry to the Mountain. Ski hire is also included as well as clothes hire if required. Once kitted out we will head out onto the ski trails for a lesson and some games.
The cost of the program is heavily subsidised and will be $15 for adults and $8 for children. We require you to bring lunch with you and so that we can have lunch out on the trails.

ChemClear and Murrindindi Shire Council have joined forces in providing scheduled collection points for people to dispose of any surplus, unwanted, unlabelled, mixed or out of date agricultural and vet chemicals.
Council’s Infrastructure and Assets portfolio spokesman Cr Bob Flowers said the ChemClear service provided a range of options for people to dispose of chemicals safely and under some guidelines, for free.
“From the hobby farmer through to major landholders, this service supports best practice principles in making smart disposal choices for agricultural and vet chemicals. It is about reducing and managing risks on farms and in business,” Cr Flowers said. “There has traditionally been a good response from people across the shire in utilising this service. Already, more than 453 litres of chemicals have been registered for this year’s collection.”
Cr Flowers said the process for collection was quick and easy.
“People need to follow a few easy steps which are provided on a toll free number or the collection website to register their unwanted chemicals for retrieval. They are given an appointment time and location to meet the retrieval team to drop off their registered chemicals for disposal,” Cr Flowers said.
ChemClear collects registered chemicals produced by manufacturers supporting the Industry Waste Reduction Scheme. These chemicals are classified as Group 1 and are collected free of charge.
As an additional service, ChemClear collects what are classified as Group 2 chemicals. These agricultural chemicals are de-registered, product out of date by a period of two years, mixed, unlabelled, unknown, or, produced by a manufacturer not contributing to the stewardship program.
There is a cost for disposal of Group 2 products which is quoted to the waste holder once their registration has been processed.

The groups are held at EACH in Ringwood once a month on a Thursday evening.
If you are already seeing a counsellor, psychologist or other support person it is still perfectly OK for you to attend this group as well … People can often gain excellent stuff from participating in a group that will complement the one-to-one work - they often do vicarious learning by hearing the journeys/work that other people have taken.
Similar groups are also run for children who have experienced a bereavement through the bushfires.

The Kinglake Ranges Mens Shed has been contacted by someone who is renovating their home.
They would like to give their 2nd hand kitchen, including cupboards, cooktop, oven, rangehood and sink (the lot!) to someone who is in need of some help with their rebuild. The cooktop and oven work perfectly, but look a little used.
The Cupboards are white with Stainless Steel handles and the Benchtop is Timber (possibly American Oak)

YMCA Victoria, in partnership with the Bushfire Appeal Fund, is once again excited to offer free school holiday programs for bushfire-affected communities over the spring holiday period. Programs will be run in the locations listed below.

Of the Commission’s 67 recommendations, the Victorian Government has supported 59 in principle and has called for further consultation.
The remaining recommendations are complex and will affect communities in different ways.
To develop its final response, the Government will consult people who are directly affected.
As part of the consultation process over the coming weeks, communities will be
asked for their views on these important decisions that will help make Victoria as
fire-safe as possible.

Come and use some great preserving kits to make your won beautiful preserved fruit and vegetables, jams and chutneys in time for Christmas. Plant Propagation & Growing Techniques
An intro to plant propagation and growing techniques. Covers basics of seed and divsion growing, seed storage, what plants to sow and when, potting on, when to plant out as well as general plant health and maintenance. Day one focuses on growing food plants and ornamentals. Day two focuses on growing local native plants.

August 13 2010 1.00pm to inspect the small unnamed road that runs off Melba Hwy near the boundary of 3523 Melba Hwy.
All these inspections are excluding unburnt areas.

Tax Help
Tax Help is a network of community volunteers who provide a free and confidential service to help people complete their tax returns at tax time. They are not ATO staff, but they receive training and support from the ATO.
Tax Help is for people on low incomes. Since tax can be complex, volunteers are only able to help with fairly straightforward tax returns. Tax Help volunteers cannot assist clients with business tax returns, partnership and trust matters, capital gains tax or rental property.
Tax Help is available by appointment at numerous community-based facilities. Locations vary from year to year.

This program is being run as a partnership with Red Cross, The Department of Human Services and Mitchell Community Health Service. This project also has the support of the Flowerdale Recovery Committee.
The volunteers will simply be talking to people to provide information and advice on services that are available in the Flowerdale area, and to enquire if any additional support is needed.
If anyone does not wish to speak to the Red Cross volunteers, please either just say ‘no thanks’ when they call at your property or call the Flowerdale Community Services Hub on 5780 2704 to advise if you would prefer the Red Cross didn't call.

Entries for the 2010 Fire Awareness Awards are now open. Awards are offered across eight main categories, rewarding the hard work of individuals, groups and organisations who have carried out fire projects in Victoria.
Grants are also on offer, including the $10,000 RACV Insurance fire safety grant and special incentive grants of up to $2,000 to develop and undertake a fire project, or to further an existing fire project in Victoria.

Flowerdale Education Hub really taking shape
I haven't posted on the progress of the Flowerdale Education Hub for a couple of weeks and there has been plenty of progress as the new building really begins to take shape.
The first photo below shows the foundations and flooring
In the last two weeks there has been plenty of building work and the frame is up and you can now see the shape of the building:
The Education Hub is due to be complete by October and with the work to date things are looking good.
