THE FLOWERDALE VALLEY TREE LOGO and THE NEW COMMUNITY HOUSE
The Project Reference Group for the new Community House is seeking input on the inclusion of the Flowerdale Valley Tree Logo into its design. The plans include the design being put on the roof and incorporated into the floor near the entrance of the building.

ABOUT THE LOGO
After the fires of February 2009, people were invited to submit a logo for the Flowerdale Valley. The group who organized the Day of Service And Celebration held last year at Moores Road Reserve, decided on a winner and 400 Tree Logo badges were made. Each person who attended that day was given an “iron-on” badge with the new Flowerdale Valley Logo on it. This was a gift to each attendee – a memento of the day – a reminder that we are united in all our grief and all our joys - a symbol of hope and recovery. This gift was paid from the Memorial Funds money auspiced through the Shire of Murrindindi.
Many people wear the badge with pride on a favourite piece of clothing. Many people have put the badge safely away – for some, the first of a new collection of mementos. More than 85 people of all ages, across the Flowerdale Valley, have the Tree Logo tattooed on some part of their body. Tee-shirts with the Tree Logo are being sold locally with all profits being donated to the “Flowerdale Fund”. One of our local artists is using the Tree Logo as the central theme of her installation, as part of the Illuminated By Fire Arts Project. The well renowned author, Arthur Zable has written about the Flowerdale Valley Tree Logo in “The Monthly”, which is circulated Australia wide.
Sony Music Youth Program
The Sony Music Program run on Friday nights at the Hall in co-junction with Salvation Army for the youth of area will now be moved to the Spring Valley Recreation Reserve until Hall is renovated. Starting this Friday 30th July at 4.30pm.
This is a great program which is enjoyed by the youth so if you haven't been before not too late to join this group.

Kinglake Mens Shed open for use for Flowerdale
Whilst the Flowerdale Mens Shed is waiting to happen we are pleased to offer any men from the Flowerdale area an opportunity to visit and become involved in the Kinglake Ranges Mens Shed. Flowerdale Mens Shed members are not required to take our KRMS membership but we would appreciate a gold coin donation when they visit.
The Kinglake Ranges Mens Shed is open Friday 9am – 4pm and Saturday 10am – 1pm and is located at 5 Oldfield Road Pheasant Creek.

Grants help young people shape their future

Opportunities are now open for young people across the Shire of Murrindindi to see their ideas that support young people through the arts, sport and education come to fruition under the Shape Your Future Youth Grants Program.
Council’s Community and Customer Service spokesman Cr Cris Ruhr said the grants were wide-raging and supported individual projects or events that created youth participation.
“From writing your own book, to organising a bike, skate or scooter competition through to creating your artwork masterpiece, these grants offer many opportunities for young people to shape their future,” Cr Ruhr said.
The grants are open to young people aged 12 to 25 years old who live, work or study in the Murrindindi Shire Council municipality. The two categories offer an individual sponsorship of $500 (inclusive) and a small grants category that offers up $2000 (inclusive).
Funding will be granted to projects that:
apply social, recreational/sports, arts or a cultural elements
provide an educational component that increases learning and skills development
promote an understanding of young people’s needs and aspirations
meet a demonstrated community need for young people and contribute to improve their wellbeing.
“If you have an idea for a project, event or activity that you would like funded then why not round up some mates and organise a workshop, expo, competition or a leadership day/camp. Or you may choose to look at individual funding to create a CD, music clip or piece of art, the ideas are endless,” Cr Ruhr said.
Applications open on 2 August and close 29 October 2010. Young people wanting further information or to discuss their idea can contact Rani (03) 5772 0713.

Over the past few months, local residents have been participating in a range of forums and discussions about what is important for the future of their communities, in order to develop a Kinglake Ranges, Flowerdale and Toolangi Plan and Design Framework.
A further Planning Day is now being held on Sunday 25 July to bring together the findings of the community consultation and detailed investigations undertaken so far. The Planning Day will involve discussions around key issues raised by the communities, and the development of a shared vision and directions statement for the collective communities that will shape the draft Plan and Design Framework.
Community members in the Kinglake Ranges, Flowerdale, Hazeldene, Toolangi and Castella region are invited to attend.

When I was first elected in 1985 I was constantly reminded that the Council must consider all costs when we set budgets and approve projects including the on-going operational costs into the future.
That is why our Council Plan sets the framework of community expectations of service and the budget in an effort to deliver on those community expectations
Murrindindi Shire Council is proposing an annual six per cent increase in rates and municipal charge collections through until 2013/14 in an effort to meet the shire’s rebuilding challenges, community service provisions and future capital infrastructure projects and maintenance needs.
The Council has endorsed the updated 2009-13 Council Plan and Strategic Resource Plan for public consultation, and we make no secret of the fact that there are many financial challenges facing the shire.
While our budget deliberations are progressing, the release of the revised Council and Strategic Resource Plan highlights the growing gap between external funding and Council’s contribution to the bushfire recovery.
The Strategic Resource Plan outlines our financial position until the end of the Council term in 2013/14, and while we are in a sound position, we will need to make a number of significant decisions in terms of project development and maintenance priorities.
At the end of this financial year, as a Council we expect to have spent in excess of $61 million on the fire recovery and received external funding of $54 million.
While we are greatly appreciative of the funds, there is no denying that the $7 million shortfall is having a significant affect on our financial position.
Our challenge in the new financial year is deciding between identified and necessary restoration works and Council’s ability to fund these works.
The Strategic Resource Plan has highlighted the need for Council to support those works that are funded by:
Insurance payments;
Government grants; or
Loan Funds for identified facilities upgrades.
We still have $5.6 million of Bushfire Projects that require funding, and Council will soon be prioritising those projects that fall within our financial means. We will also be indentifying alternate means of funding for those projects and activities which currently have no identified funding source. The reality is if funding is not available then it will be difficult to proceed.
It is essential that we apply prudent fiscal practices so that the Council continues to operate within a sound financial position.
I would urge people to make comment on the plans. It is important that the community is well aware of our challenges and provide the necessary input into determining what they believe are our priorities moving forward.”
The revised Council Plan and Strategic Resource Plan will be available at Council offices, agencies and the public comment page of this website from 20 July 2010. It will be open for comment for 28 days. A revised plan will be endorsed following the public consultation period at the 25 August Council meeting.

From Chainsaw Classes to Timberware Parties
The chainsaw classes for women are now in the second cycle and have a new name. Participants in the most recent group said the classes were a bit like a Tupperware party and have christened the classes Timberware Parties.
The classes are now about to go through the third cycle and we have had participants from Flowerdale together with Strath Creek, Murrindindi and Kinglake.
The graduates I have spoken to are almost scarily excited about their new found skills. I even spotted a recent graduate yesterday having a relaxing drink at the pub having spent the day with her husband on a firewood collection mission.

This two-day workshop about learning and understanding the art of mosaic will be held at the Kinglake West Uniting Church in September.
Mosaic is the art of creating images with an assemblage of small pieces of colored glass, stone, or other materials. It may be a technique of decorative art, an aspect of interior decoration, or of cultural and spiritual significance. (Wikipedia).
Perhaps many who have lost homes in the fire regions were able to recover pieces of memorabilia from home sites and are not quite sure how to preserve them. Mosaic may well be the answer. Creating a very special art piece that can be placed in a new home that brings both the old and the new into harmony may help to bring about a sense of connection to the old and the new.
Mrs Barbara Ramage and Mrs Lorraine Ralston will facilitate Working with Mosaic. Both are experienced craftswomen who will demonstrate and teach participants the foundation of this art form.
The workshop is sponsored by Unitingcare Bush Fire Recovery and co-facilitated by Bette Phillips, Creative Ministries Network.
The workshop is of no cost to participants; however, bookings are essential, as numbers are limited to ensure each individual will have the experience of learning the craft.
Please bring a plate to share for lunch both days.

Saturday was rainy, cold.
Five of us were brave and bold.
Got to Burgo’s shed and met
our fellow chain saw suffragettes.
Roaring fire warmed us up.
Put some coffee in a cup.
Bolt down coffee. Let’s begin.
Don’t touch chainsaws, just tune in.

Those who are not safe are cursed”.
Next, we pull the saw apart,
before we even make it start.!!!!!
I think: “Now Pete don’t push your luck,
cause my mechanic’s skills, they suck”

But smooth as silk our Pete explained
the mystery of the saw unchained.
We gave our saws a healthy cleaning.

put them back together again.
Bits left over? No.!!! Surprise.!!!
Learnt more than I realized.!!
Then with our files we learned a thing
or two about chain sharpening.
I’m a chain saw devotee.
I’ll chain saw everything I see.

First I have to learn to use it.!!!!!
That’s why I’m going back next week.
